On the 8th of March we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s a time for reflection, celebration, and action. This day not only honours the achievements and contributions of women worldwide but also serves as a reminder of the progress yet to be made. In the realm of commercial interior design and fitout, women have been breaking barriers, redefining spaces, and leaving a lasting mark on the industry. Here at Whitespace, we believe in celebrating the talent, creativity, and resilience of the women in our field.
In the UK, women have been pivotal in shaping the landscape of commercial interior design. According to recent statistics from the Design Council, women make up 65% of the interior design workforce in the UK, showcasing their significant presence and influence in the industry. In the world of commercial interiors, women are shattering stereotypes and proving that creativity knows no bounds. Whether it’s designing cutting-edge office spaces, retail environments, or hospitality venues, women are pushing the boundaries of what is possible. By embracing diversity and fostering an inclusive work culture, we create spaces that reflect the needs and aspirations of all individuals.

Alyx – Throughout secondary school I always had a love for subjects like construction and technology and design. It was through these subjects I found my love for CAD. In my role I can create 3D visuals that bring a floor plan design to life. I have also had the privilege to attend networking events with Julie and Fiona to expand my knowledge on the industry and meet many other women just like us. Meeting and learning from these women have really helped my confidence to thrive in this industry.
Julie –Recognising my flair for design, I pursued a BSc in Textiles at Huddersfield University, laying the groundwork for a career that seamlessly blended technical expertise with creative ingenuity. I have since worked on diverse projects worldwide, breaking gender barriers in the traditionally male-dominated construction industry. We acknowledge the collective strides of women in construction, emphasising the importance of empowering future generations to pursue their passions unencumbered by gender stereotypes.
Fiona – As the Director and creator of Whitespace, I am deeply passionate about collaborating with a team of ambitious women. International Women’s Day serves as a powerful opportunity to recognise and honour the contributions of women across the globe. At Whitespace, we celebrate the diverse talents and dedication of every woman in our team, highlighting their invaluable role in shaping our organisation’s success. This day is a testament to the collective efforts of women worldwide, and it’s a privilege to be part of a community that uplifts and empowers women in all spheres of life.
